Elements and principles of design

TASK 1 Exploration

Gestalt Theory

In the context of design. Gestalt theory is relevant in understanding how people perceive and interpret visual information. Some key principles of Gestalt theory in design include proximity, closure, similarity, common region, continuity, figure-ground, symmetry, common fate.

Contrast

Contrast is the distinction between elements in an art piece and how they complement of clash with one another. In instances of clashes, this denotes a hard contrast between elements such as colors, shapes, or imagery.

Emphasis

Like contrast, emphasis is when an artist uses a combination of techniques to draw the viewer’s attention to a crucial component of their art piece.

Yet, unlike contrast, emphasis relies on various elements to draw a viewer’s attention. It cannot rely on a singular technique such as juxtapositions to emphasize the point of contrast.

Balance

Balance refers to the visual weight conveyed to the observer about the total composition of an art piece. Balance is meant to express feelings of stability and comfort, while imbalance is used to cause feelings of discomfort in the viewer.

Repetition

Repetition is a fundamental principle in design that involves the repeated use of visual elements or motifs throughout a composition. It is a powerful tool used by designers to create unity, consistency, and visual interest in their designs.

Movement

This design principle involves an illusion of movement in artworks. It guides the viewer’s eye in the direction and velocity of the movements an artist hopes to replicate. Artists should use linework to achieve the illusion of movement.

Harmony & Unity
https://thevirtualinstructor.com/blog/unity-harmony-and-variety-principles-of-art

harmony focuses on the relationship and balance between individual elements within a design, while unity emphasizes the overall coherence and integration of those elements to form a cohesive whole. Together, they contribute to creating visually appealing, well-organized, and effective design compositions.

Symbol

https://logosandtypes.com/alphabet/letter-s/symbol-studio/

A symbol in design is a visual representation or graphical element that conveys a specific meaning, idea, or concept. Symbols are powerful tools used by designers to communicate effectively with the audience. They are often simple, iconic, and easily recognizable, making them ideal for conveying complex messages in a concise and memorable way.

Word And Image

The interplay between words and images is a fundamental aspect of design and communication, particularly in visual media such as graphic design, advertising, publishing, and web design.when combined thoughtfully, can create engaging, informative, and emotionally resonant visual experiences for the audience.

Life below water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Your convenience is their extinction
Christian Waters        In September 2015

Combining "Life Below Water" with design principles can create eye-catching and impactful design works that call attention to the protection of marine ecosystems.

This photo shows how sea turtles are killed by rubbish, and Christian Waters was inspired to create this photo after seeing traces of rubbish on a Malaysian beach.

The photo shows a sea turtle on a white sandy beach. The shell on it's back is gone, replaced by a lot of garbage filling its back. It's killed by this garbage. The caption of the image reads "Your convenience is their extinction". Other creatures in the ocean are like this sea turtle, this also reflects the damage caused by garbage to the ecological balance of the ocean.

In this picture, I observed that his design used Gestalt theory, contrast, symbol, word and  image.

Teacher suggestion

change the description of each design principle to be as detailed as possible in your own words.
Attach a link to the original sourceto the selected image that represents each design principle.

Self-reflection

The text describing each design principle can be simple and clear, but the understanding of the design principles is not deep enough. I chose a design relative to the United Nations goals. At the beginning, I moved the online content to my blog, but it was wrong, so I replaced it with my own understanding.
